Great Concert: Wrong Venue
The unique talent of Hey Arnold Live! Music is unquestionably wonderful. Ms Merchant is captivating, whatever the setting. The Dodge Theater, Phoenix, was only about a third full - a bit of an aircraft hanger at the best of times. It's a fantastic piece of work, beautifully performed, covering a multitude of musical styles and influences, and produced. However, it is not really one of those "new listeners start here" albums. Herein lies the problem - the show is a stage presentation of the concept album, complete with PowerPoint presentation, and it was just lost in the Dodge. The music and its presentation needed a much more intimate setting. On this tour, she is showcasing her new album, "Leave Your Sleep" - a double CD set of poems set to her own musical compositions, relating to childhood. In the wrong setting, a combination of unrealized audience expectations never gave the evening a fair chance. The evening would have been perfect at The Orpheum theater (1,300 capacity). It was beautifully written and performed by a stage full of great musicians. My wife and I enjoyed the evening tremendously.
